For Students

Are you a Furman undergraduate student seeking research and/or internship experiences? The information below is specifically for you.

If you are interested in either research or internship experiences in the Morris Lab, please send me an email.

Undergraduate Research

We are an active research lab that supports undergraduate research students each summer. Most projects are developed as pieces of larger, ongoing population genetics projects funded by outside grants. Students typically acquire stipend support through the Furman Undergraduate Research Office. Projects may have field components, lab components, or both, depending on the interests of the student. Students use this experience to fulfill the BIO 502 Research experience, which requires a written research paper and a presentation. Several former Morris Lab members have been involved in research resulting in publications in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, students often have the opportunity to travel to conferences to present their work.

Undergraduate Internship

We regularly support undergraduate interns in our Natural History Collections. Internship structure is flexible, and the focus can vary dependent on student interests. Several students have been actively involved in herbarium specimen curation and digitization. One student developed an educational display highlighting all of our collections. One student worked in both the herbarium and in vertebrate collections, where he was responsible for replacing ethanol in specimen jars. Another student did an artistic project that involved revamping the Furman Field Guide. Anything you can imagine related to our Natural History Collections can be an internship experience! Students typically acquire stipend support for this internship through the Furman Internship Office or through the Department of Biology. Students use this experience to meet the requirements of the BIO 503 Internship, which requires a presentation. Additionally, students have the opportunity to travel to conferences to present their work.
